The Panama Fire Department issued a nationwide alert after detecting a sustained increase in swarms of Africanized bees in areas near residences, a situation that represents a potential risk to the safety of the population. According to Captain Luis Joseph, of the Directorate of Operations, Extinction, Search and Rescue, these insects can exhibit highly defensive behavior when they perceive threats, which can lead to collective attacks capable of causing serious injuries and even endangering people’s lives. Authorities have identified the presence of swarms on roofs, patios, gardens, and structures near homes, increasing the exposure of families, especially children, the elderly, and pets. The security agency reiterated that swarms should not be removed, dispersed, or destroyed on one’s own, as any improvised intervention could trigger an aggressive reaction. In the event of any sighting, firefighters urge citizens to immediately report to 103, the emergency line, so that specialized personnel can attend to the situation under safe protocols.
