Panama Canal: A One Time Only Gulf Coast Sailing Cruise

2026-03-08 - 02:38

If your thoughts about cruises include “they only go to Mexico” or “I’ve already been where they go,” then it’s time to play a rousing rendition of “change your tune”. That’s because we’ve got some exciting news for Gulf Coast cruise fans who truly want to see something amazing. Granted, it’s easy to understand why you might think about sailing from the Port of New Orleans, the Port of Galveston, or the Port of Mobile in Alabama the way you do. Most of the cruise itineraries are either a quick jaunt to Mexico and Honduras or maybe a visit to some of the other islands of the Caribbean. Gulf Coast Cruise Ship to Reposition Via the Panama Canal But how would you like to board a ship, sail across the Gulf, and visit an exotic location in South America? What if instead of turning north, that ship turned west and you transited the Panama Canal? If that’s been on your bucket list to do, there is good news from Disney Cruises. Disney has announced a repositioning cruise that will sail in less than a month. If you’ve got free time and the desire to experience a one-of-a-kind and, for most of us, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you need to get stepping. Where Will Disney’s Repositioning Cruise From Galveston Take You? The Disney Magic will depart Galveston on April 5th at 3:30 in the afternoon. It will sail south to Cozumel and then even further south for a day in Cartagena, Colombia. From Colombia, the ship will sail west and spend the day, April 11, 2026, transiting the Panama Canal. The canal transit takes a full day. And you will see some amazing sites along the way. You will get a first-hand look at one of the most amazing engineering structures ever built. Plus, there is that brief moment, I learned this from experience, where you will sail past a Panamanian prison. If you’re “lucky,” the prisoners will drop their pants and moon you. Following the exit of the canal into the Pacific Ocean, the Disney Magic will head up the coast of western Mexico. It’s unclear at this time how the current travel advisories and threats of violence in Mexico might affect the final itinerary and the actual ports of call. Can You Sail from Galveston to San Diego on a Cruise Ship? Eventually, you’ll wind up in San Diego, California, on the 19th of April. From there, you could book another cruise or fly back to Houston or wherever home might be for you. You can often get great deals on repositioning cruises, and they often stop at places the normal itineraries don’t, so if you’re a cruise fan, search for those cruises from your favorite cruise line. It might also give you a chance to explore a different cruise line. It’s all about your tastes and what you value during your leisure time. Safe cruising, keep up to date on those travel advisories, and be grateful you’re not on one of these ships that’s currently sailing in the contested waters of the Middle East.
