South of Puerto Armuelles an Earthquake Magnitude 5.5 was Recorded

Panama City, Panama: The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama reported a magnitude 5.5 earthquake that occurred on February 24 at 3:38 pm, local time. The earthquake had a depth of 19 kilometers and was located in the border region between Panama and Costa Rica, 5 kilometers south of Puerto Armuelles. According to the preliminary report, the earthquake was felt in several nearby towns, although no material damage or casualties have been reported so far. Local authorities are monitoring the area for possible aftershocks. Minutes later, the institute recorded a magnitude 3.4 aftershock at 3:45 pm, at a depth of 15 kilometers, located 7 kilometers southeast of Puerto Armuelles. This second tremor reinforces the authorities’ recommendation to remain attentive to updates on seismic activity in the region. Subsequently, two more aftershocks were recorded. Authorities conducted monitoring and no injuries or damage were reported.
