2026-03-04 - 01:46

Panama City was among the 15 finalists in the Tunnel Vision Challenge, a competition that gathered 487 proposals worldwide. The announcement was made by Elon Musk’s “The Boring Company” which publicly congratulated the selected cities. Among those 16 names is Panama, with Mayor Mayer Mizrachi’s proposal to build a pedestrian tunnel under the Canal, a project that as has been proposed, would be developed free of charge by the organizing company. Panama City was also the only city outside the United States to advance to the final stage. This places it on a shortlist, competing with major U.S. cities that also submitted their proposals. Upon hearing the news, Mayor Mayer Mizrachi reacted on social media. “We did it! The pedestrian tunnel under the Canal was selected. Panama City is the only city outside the USA selected,” he wrote, highlighting that the country is once again in the international conversation. The Boring Company announced that the winner will be revealed on March 23. After that date, they indicated, construction of the winning project would begin at no cost to the chosen city. Panama now awaits the final verdict. The proposal is in its final stages. On March 23, it will be known whether the tunnel under the Canal will move from the planning stage to construction. Let’s go for it!
